Ongoing Programmes and Activities

  1. School fees and material support programme: Paying school fees for needy girls who do well in primary school examination but cannot afford to pay fees for secondary school. Also assisting primary schools with basic necessities, i.e. stationary, text books, exam papers, etc

  2. Assisting communities to obtain clean and safe water and to free up women and girls’ time for other useful activities such as education, quality family time and business.

  3. Organising for volunteer/mentorship activities in the villages

  4. Undertaking othe support activities to help the communitywhen and as required 

Achievements to-date


With the help of well-wishers and commitment from members, over the years, ILHAM has undertaken a number of activities in line with its mission and objectives. Achievements to-date are as presented in the table below:



 Description Activities
 Education: Secondary school fees and materials support programme Since 2006, the organisation has to-date sponsored 18 students from 7 villages, out of who 6 have completed secondary school in 2009. The rest are still continuing. In addition, we have procured and supplied stationary, exam papers, books and other materials to primary school students and schools
 Health: Fact finding mission, village cleanup and medical camp participationIn 2006, ILHAM members participated in a fact finding mission with doctors from Medicines De Monde (MDM) and representatives from KIBODO to determine the requirement for improvement of health services and delivery

In 2008, we organised for cleanup exercises in the villages. The volunteer students from Oberlin College (USA) did this.

Contributed funds towards facilitating for medical camp that was held in Tchundwa village in August 2008. A member of ILHAM participated in the camp

Water project: Installation of manual water pumps in wells Between October 2007 and July 2008, sponsored by various well-wishers, ILHAM has installed 15 manual water pumps in 13 remote villages in Lamu District. The villages that benefited are: Tchundwa, Kizingitini, Faza, Myabogi, Mwbajumwali, Kizingitini, Siu, Mtangawanda Ndau, Kiwayu, Kiunga, Shanga and Pate. Sponsors for this project are: Australian Government (7 wells), Woodside Energy of Australia (5 wells) and Kenya National Oil Corporation (3 wells).

Volunteer programme: Teaching, sports and village cleanupJanuary 2007: Four volunteers for 4 weeks from the US (Students of Oberlin College) were posted to Faza Secondary School, Rasini and Tchundwa Primary schools to teach students and participate in a number of extra curricular activates.

July 2007: Spending 2 weeks in Tchundwa, a volunteer from France participated in a number of community and motivational activities for primary school children. These included teaching and organising for football competitions amongst schools in the villages.

January 2008: Three volunteers from the US (Students of Oberlin College - one repeat from the January 2007 group) were in the villages for 4 weeks to teach in schools, organise football tournaments, village cleanup exercises, amongst others.

June 2009: A volunteer from Nairobi was sent to Tchundwa primary school to teach class 8 for 3 weeks.

Mentorship programme: Mentoring students, teachers, parents, women groups and youth
ILHAM members have been holding meetings with primary school students, teachers and parents to empathise the importance of education

In 2007, ILHAM members held a meeting with women groups in Tchundwa to give them advise on how to manage such groups

In 2007, ILHAM members held meetings with youth who had finished form IV but have not been active with the aim of finding ways to assist them develop income generating activities

 Affiliation and training: British Council -Debate to Action
In 2007, ILHAM member (Biti Fankupi) participated in the training in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Vision 2030 and Poverty Reduction Strategy  and the subsequent of the agenda

Others: Fundraising for Faza fire disaster fund
 Helped to raise funds to contribute towards the Fire disaster fund to help reconstruct houses that were destroyed by a fire that struck the village in September 2009. ILHAM, the community and well-wishers managed to raise Kshs150,000.


Planned Activities

  1. Organising youth events so as to involve them in more useful and productive activities

  2. Establishing a vocational training institute in one of the villages so that we can offer training to girls who finish primary schools and do not make it to secondary schools or those who finish form four but cannot get to attend university.

  3. Establish a basic rehabilitation centre to cater for youth who are involved in non-productive and anti-social activities (i.e. drug use).

Expected Results

It is expected that future generations of women living in Lamu District will become more empowered, educated, better equipped and be in better position to contribute to the well being of the society.
